I often get comments from people saying they wish they could draw like me or I'd love to have a talent like that, I often respond saying they can and it's all practice (which is often met with disparaging comments about their own drawing skills!) I am a firm believer that anyone can learn to draw if they want to and are willing to put in the time and practice (seriously, I'm not placating anyone or just being nice) Of course there are people with natural talent or an eye for it but a huge part is continued learning and practice! So yes, anyone can learn to draw but you will never be able to draw 'like me' and here's why. It will come as no surprise that I follow a lot of artists on social media, a lot of realism artists especially and I can tell you most of the time I know whose art I am looking at before I see the name. Yes even with photo realistic artists who are painstakingly recreating an image to make it as real as possible (which is one reason why it's so frustrating that realism is sometimes looked down upon as a pointless exercise when a camera can do the job but that's a whole other blog!) and even when the artists have drawn the exact same thing which happens fairly often, we seem tone drawn to the same stunning references! You could ask 10 artists in a room to draw from the same reference, eith the same paper and the same pencils, even give them an outline - the end result would still look different! If you truly want to learn- you can but! Dont try to draw like me (or your favourite artist). Practice, copy, emulate, watch, learn but draw like you!
My 5 Top Tips to improve your drawing
1 - Read Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards
2 - Find and follow some artists you admire and watch their process
3 - Draw things you love - the more interest you have in your subject, the less likely you are to give up
4 - Only compare yourself to your past - not to any one else
5 - Practice LOTS! Every day if possible, even if it's just 10 minutes - it all helps
